Accessibility statement
This site works with a keyboard alone, and we name the four places it still falls short.
We are a web design studio in Austin, TX. Building small business websites that anyone can use is part of the job, so our own site is held to the same rules we write into client handovers. Below is every commitment as a ledger row, then the limits we know about.
Part A
What we commit to on every page
Each row is a rule our front-end developer checks before a page ships. The middle column says what it means for you. The right column says why we bother.
| Clause | In plain words | Why it applies |
|---|---|---|
| A.1Keyboard reachTab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space | Every link, button, tab, form field and the menu sheet can be reached and used without a mouse. The homepage tabs also answer the arrow keys, Home and End. | Plenty of people browse with a keyboard, a switch or voice control that drives the keyboard. A control you cannot tab to does not exist for them. |
| A.2Visible focus2px teal outline, 3px offset | Whatever has focus gets a teal outline and, on links, a short underline bar. We never remove the outline to make a design look cleaner. | Removing focus outlines is the single most common fault we find when we rebuild a site. It is also the cheapest to fix. |
| A.3Skip linkfirst focusable item | Press Tab once on any page and a "Skip to content" link appears. It jumps past the contact strip and the eight-item navigation. | Without it, a keyboard user tabs through ten controls before reaching the first paragraph, on every single page. |
| A.4Contrast4.5:1 body, 3:1 large type | Body text is near-black ink on off-white paper. The teal accent is darkened to a separate text shade wherever it carries words, because the bright teal alone does not pass on white. | Our palette is pale and cool on purpose. That makes contrast the thing most likely to slip, so every colour pair is measured, not judged by eye. |
| A.5Reduced motionprefers-reduced-motion | If your device asks for less motion, the rotating headline word stops on "website", section fades are switched off and the pointer-following preview images are not shown. The full word list is still read out to screen readers. | Movement on screen can trigger nausea or vertigo. A brand device is not worth that, so the static version is a complete version. |
| A.6Touch equivalentspointer: coarse | Magnetic buttons and the hover-follow preview run only on a fine pointer. On a phone or tablet the preview pictures sit inline as small thumbnails next to each service, so nothing is hidden behind a hover. | A finger cannot hover. Anything that only appears on hover is content a touch user never sees. |
| A.7Text alternativesalt, aria-hidden | Every photograph has a written description of what it shows: the actual cards, the actual menu, the actual screen. Icons are marked decorative because the words beside them already say the same thing. | Our work is visual. A screen reader user deciding whether to hire us should still learn what we made. |
| A.8Forms that explain themselveslabel, aria-describedby | Each field has a written label, not just greyed placeholder text. Errors appear in words next to the field, in red with an icon, and are announced to assistive technology. | An inquiry form that cannot be completed is a closed door. Colour alone is never the only signal that something went wrong. |
| A.9Zoom and reflow320px, 400% zoom | Pages reflow down to a 320px wide screen with no sideways scrolling. Wide tables, like this one, turn into labelled blocks on a phone instead of shrinking. | People with low vision zoom in hard. At 400% a desktop browser behaves like a small phone, so the phone layout has to hold. |
Part B
Known limits, stated plainly
These are the gaps we know about today. We would rather list them than have you discover them.
| Clause | What happens | What we are doing about it |
|---|---|---|
| B.1Support chat widgetrobuaf7.php | New replies from the studio are announced by a polite live region, but some screen reader and browser pairings read the whole conversation again instead of only the new line. | The phone line and email reach the same people. We are testing a change that announces one message at a time. |
| B.2Estimator slidersestimate.html | The range sliders work with arrow keys, but moving the page count one step at a time from 0 to 20 is slow by keyboard. The live total updates on every step and can be chatty. | Page Up and Page Down jump in larger steps. If it is still awkward, call and we will run the numbers with you. |
| B.3Case-study photographswork.html | Photographs of printed pieces describe the object, not every word printed on it. Lettering in the shots is soft on purpose, so it is not a readable sample of the type. | The written case beside each picture carries the facts. Ask, and we will send the full specification as plain text. |
| B.4Third-party fontsfonts.googleapis.com | Typefaces load from Google Fonts. On a very slow connection the text first appears in a fallback face, then shifts slightly when Bodoni Moda arrives. | Text is never hidden while fonts load. Self-hosting the files is on the list for the next update of this site. |
How we test
Before a page goes live, our developer tabs through it end to end with no mouse attached. Then VoiceOver on macOS and iOS, and NVDA with Firefox on Windows. Then the browser at 400% zoom and a real 320px phone, not just a resized window.
Automated checkers catch maybe a third of real problems. We run one, and we do not treat a clean report as proof of anything.
The same checklist goes into every client handover. If you are commissioning a small business website in Austin from us, you get it as a page in the delivery notes, and the terms cover the 30-day fix window for faults found after launch.
Report a barrier
Tell us the page, what you were trying to do and what got in the way. The device and assistive technology help if you know them. You do not need to know which guideline it breaks.
Email [email protected] or call +1 (448) 555-0161. We usually answer within two working days, and if the fix is small it is often live the same week.
Need something from us in another format, such as a quote as plain text or a call instead of a form? Say so. Post reaches us at 83 River Road, Office 12, Austin, Texas 02757.
